Antonio and Jorge Castillo were pivotal figures in what is now considered the Gold Age of Mexican silver jewellery that began in the early 1930s. Ambitious and creative, the Castillo brothers were at the fore-front of experimental jewellery technique like married metals and mosaic inlays. Their designs were bold and modern, with strong influences from pre-Columbian art and nature, as exemplified in this statement brooch.

The symmetry of this chunky Los Castillo design is undeniable. A pre-Columbian flower head is circled by radiating domed beads on ornate scroll-work, all on a heavy oxidised base that shows its original early 20th century patina. The brooch closes with an elegant, unobtrusive pin and roll-over clasp.

With a full Los Castillo hallmark, this statement brooch closes with a firm pin and roll-over clasp. This structurally refined design feels more like wearable sculpture than jewellery and has the sort of forward-facing design that never dates.
